Solo travel in London: Navigating safely

We may as well start with the big one: safety.

Is London a safe city? In a word, yes. In fact in a survey by The Economist, London was ranked as the 15th safest city in the world. But that does come with some caveats.

Being one of the worlds biggest metropolises means that London comes with the typical “common sense warning” that most capitals do. Violent crime is rare, with the biggest problem for tourists being pickpocketing.

To avoid any trouble, remember to always remain aware of your surroundings (e.g. avoid being too engrossed in Google Maps on your phone or using your headphones as you walk around). Always use reliable transportation, avoid walking in areas with little lighting late at night, and trust your instincts. Remember, if it doesn’t feel right, just leave.

London’s West End is famous for its dazzling array of theaters and world-class productions. The experience of witnessing a mesmerizing performance, such as The Phantom of the Opera or Les Misérables, is enhanced when you can lose yourself in the story without distractions.

You can purchase theater tickets any number of ways: online, directly at the theater, or even through your hotel. But if you’re on a budget, check out the TKTS booth in Leicester Square. This little stand is known for offering last-minute deals for London’s West End shows. As a solo traveler who just needs one seat, you’ll definitely be able to see an amazing show.

Try delicious street food

If you want to explore  a variety of culinary offerings (and who wouldn’t) London’s vibrant street food scene is a paradise for intrepid solo travelers.

Street food markets in London like Maltby Street, Brick Lane, Borough, Camden, and the Southbank Centre Food Market serve up dishes from all around the world, ensuring that you can mix and match to your heart’s content. To top it off, you’re not bound by the preferences of companions, so you can freely explore and sample to your heart’s content.

Take a fun and insightful walking tour

Traveling solo is not shorthand for being alone. In fact, as most seasoned travelers know, some of the most enriching interactions and experiences you can have will often happen with strangers you meet on your travels.

Our recommendation for one of the best ways to flap your social wings is by taking a walking tour. With its storied history, rich culture, and dark secrets, London is one of the best places in the world to let a knowledgeable tour guide show you the city.
